CONSULT WITH YOUR PARENTS

"When you go, they [the words of your parents' God] shall lead you; when you sleep, they shall keep you; and when you waken, they shall talk with you. For the commandment is a lamp, and the whole teaching [of the law] is light, and reproofs of discipline are the way of life."
This teaching is about guidance and direction. When we have to make a decision and we don't know what to do, this passage teaches us what we ought to do. First of all, we need to understand that yes, we need to make decisions. Some people don't know what to do so they just wait on God and do nothing at all. But they sometimes forget that they need to make a decision in order for God to move in their lives. It says here in verse 22a, "When you go…" It doesn't say, "If you go." It says, "When you go," meaning you have to make a decision to go somewhere or do something. Then it says, "..they [the words of your parents' God] shall lead you…" In other words, the Word of God will lead you once you have made your decision.
Verse 22 then says, "when you sleep, they shall keep you; and when you waken, they shall talk with you." So the Word of God will reveal what paths you should take to accomplish the goal you have made. But if you want His Word to keep you when you sleep and talk with you when you waken, then you have to read and meditate upon the Word of God before bed and when you wake up. God's Word should always be in your heart.
Then verse 23a says, "For the commandment is a lamp, and the whole teaching [of the law] is light." So the entire Word of God is a lamp that will lead you the right way. It's important to also notice that your parents' input concerning your life is very important as well. The Word of God that your parents taught you will lead you. We also read in verse 23b, "and reproofs of discipline are the way of life." This includes God's discipline, but also your parents' discipline and instruction as well.
It's so important to always remember the Word of God that our parents have taught us. That Word is the light of your life. So if you don't know what to do in your life, turn to the Word of God. But also, consult with your parents. Ask them what they think about the situation that you're in or the decision that you're about to make. Even if your parents aren't alive anymore, you can still consider what they would say. Ask yourself, "If my parents were here right now, what would they say about this situation?" Based on what you've already learned from them in the past, you can gain a pretty good idea of what they would say.
My mother is a believer, but my father isn't. Yet I listen to both of them even though compared to them I've made much better choices in my life than they have. When I'm not sure about a decision, I consult with both of them. If they don't agree that the decision is wise, then I don't proceed until they agree. If they do agree that it's a wise decision, then I can trust that it's probably a good course of action to take. Most parents have very good intentions for their children. I found it interesting to notice that even though my mother is a believer and my father isn't, they both have the same desires for me. They both desire for me to be successful, be in good health, and raise a happy family. I once asked my father how I should raise my children. To my surprise, he listed what amounted to the last six commandments as part of his advice (he does not know the 10 Commandments). He told me to teach my children to obey their parents, teach them not to lie, steal, cheat, covet, etc. Although my father is an unbeliever, he was still teaching me some of the commandments of God without being aware they were part of divine law. Those commandments are light. So when we obey them, we will have direction in our lives.
That's why it's so important to read and meditate upon the Word of God daily so that the Word will always be with us. But it's also important to consult with our parents in regards to our major life decisions. God's instructions are the most important, but your parents' instructions are very important as well. So regardless of how old we are, we should always consult with our parents. Regardless of whether our parents are alive or dead, we should still consider their opinions concerning our decisions. That's so important to do because as it says here, "the reproofs of discipline are the way of life."
