Psalm 119:114, 125
"You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word… I am Your servant; give me understanding (discernment and comprehension), that I may know (discern and be familiar with the character of) Your testimonies."
What a powerful truth! God is our hiding place. Verse 14 sounds very familiar to Psalm 32:7 where it says, "You are a hiding place for me; You, Lord, preserve me from trouble, You surround me with songs and shouts of deliverance. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!" God is our protection and our shield, but He can only be our protection if we seek after a hiding place in Him. Let's read the second part of verse 14, "I hope in Your word." Hoping in God's Word is really our hiding place. If we don't seek a hiding place in Him, by hoping in His Word, then we cannot have the protection of the Lord.
Let's say you disobey God and mingle with an ungodly crowd. God cannot protect you there. Let's say you commit immoral and sinful acts. God cannot protect you there either. I know of a man who's a construction worker. He works very hard and earns very good money. But he entangles himself in ungodly activities. He drinks, smokes, goes to bars, and fellowships with the ungodly. He squanders his money foolishly on worldly things. Then at the end of the year, he has nothing to show for all his hard work. Everything he has earned was spent. He worked very hard but doesn't have anything to show for it. This was because he followed the steps of the ungodly.
God cannot protect us if we disobey His Word. If we commit immoral acts, such as using drugs, drinking alcohol, or committing adultery, then God cannot protect us from sicknesses and dangers. We are no longer under the shelter of His protection. The only way we can be protected by God is if we hope in His Word, meaning if we read, meditate, and obey His Word. Really, it is His Word that is our hiding place.
That's why it's so important to make the Word of God our priority in life. We have to fill our hearts with God's Word so much so that whatever we say or think is either the Word of God or influenced by the Word. Our actions should always line up with the Word of God if we want God to protect us.
Then in verse 125 we read, "I am Your servant; give me understanding (discernment and comprehension), that I may know (discern and be familiar with the character of) Your testimonies." The German translation, Hoffnung fuer Alle, (which means, ‘hope for all') says in this verse, "I am at Your service; give me understanding of Your testimonies, in which I am able to discern the will of God." If you are God's servant, then you will want to please God. In order to please God, you have to do His will. In order to know what His will is, you have to search through His Word. Understanding God's Word is what will enable you to discern His will. This is one of the greatest keys to success in life.
The Word of God should always be what motivates and guides your thinking, your speaking, and your acting because that obedience is what brings you success. No matter what you do in life, you will be successful when you seek for and discern the will of God for your life by reading and understanding His Word. You'll be successful in your relationship with God and with your spouse. You'll be successful in parenting, and you'll be successful in your studies or your work. Everything you do will succeed if you obey God and seek for His will by reading His Word.
Your future is as bright as the promises of God as long as you hope in God's Word and seek for understanding of His Word in order to discern His will. When you do that and when you stay away from ungodliness, then you will have the protection of the Lord. You will know the will of God for your life, and you will be successful in all that you do. Success and blessing are ours for the taking, but we can only receive them through obedience to God's Word. So let's get in the Word and find out what belongs to us!
