Psalm 119:104-105, 111
"Through Your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path… Your testimonies have I taken as a heritage forever, for they are the rejoicing of my heart."
Understanding is greater than knowledge. If you want to gain understanding, you need to gain knowledge first. The more knowledge you acquire the better. But once you have knowledge, you now need understanding. If you want to gain understanding, then you need the precepts of the Lord, which is the Word of God. It says here in verse 104a, "Through Your precepts I get understanding…" Having understanding is really having the ability to distinguish between what is good and evil, what is right and wrong. Only the Word of God can help you do that. That's why it's important to have God's Word in your heart.
Let's say, for example, you've been given all kinds of ideas about yourself. People have said many different things about you. People have said, "You're not good enough. You'll never make it. You'll never be successful. You're going to fail." If you don't have any understanding then you will start listening to those things and start believing them. But if you are a person who wants understanding, then you will search deeper to find out if those comments are correct.
Are those statements true? Are they false? How will you find out? Go to the Word of God. In Philippians 4:13 we read, "I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ's sufficiency." So you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. That's the truth.
So if you want understanding about your life or any life situation, go to the Word of God. Because God's Word is true, it will bring to light what is true in your own life as well. Now that God's Word has given you understanding, you should hate every false way (verse 104b). In other words, you are to hate evil because God hates evil.
To confirm this fact, let's read verse 105 again. "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." In other words, the Word of God is the lamp that will show you what steps you should be taking and what decisions you should be making for your life. His Word is also a light to your path, meaning it will lighten your path enough for you to see what decisions are wise to make. It says in Proverbs 6:23, "For the commandment is a lamp, and the whole teaching [of the law] is light, and reproofs of discipline are the way of life." So the whole teaching, meaning the entire Bible, is the light that will give you direction in life. If you ever wonder what you are supposed to do in life, read God's Word. His Word will show you where to go.
Once you gain understanding from His precepts and once you have direction from His Word, then you will rejoice as we read in verse 111, "Your testimonies have I taken as a heritage forever, for they are the rejoicing of my heart." The Word of God is a great thing to take as a heritage. Children often want money as their inheritance from their parents. But we get the Word of God from our Heavenly Father. That is the greatest inheritance we could have and the greatest inheritance we could ever leave for our children and grandchildren. This Word has far greater worth than money because if we live the Word then our obedience will cause us to be prosperous anyway. So the Word is our best heritage.
So God's Word is so important to have in our hearts. Through His Word, we will gain understanding, which is the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. Through His Word, we will gain direction in life because that Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. His Word will bless us and allow us to be a blessing to others. His Word is our greatest heritage. So every single day we should set aside time to read and meditate upon the Word of God. That's the best investment of time we can make.
