"The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The Lord is on my side and takes my part, He is among those who help me; therefore shall I see my desire established upon those who hate me."
This psalm starts with a very powerful statement. The psalmist says here, "The Lord is on my side." Actually, in this passage he makes this statement twice. The first time he says it, he follows it with another powerful statement, "I will not fear." When we lose sense of God's presence in our lives is when fear enters our hearts. Fear shows that we are lacking in love, lacking in faith, and it shows that we don't think that God is really there.
But this verse says, "The Lord is on my side; I will not fear." This is the confession that you and I have to make every time we are faced with a difficult situation. The rest of verse 6 says, "What can man do to me?" We should never be afraid of people. The only fear we should have is fear towards God, which is really reverence to Him. But other than that, our hearts should never be fearful, especially fearful of any man.
Think back to the story of David and Goliath. David was just a little shepherd boy who fought lions and bears to protect his sheep. Then he was faced with a real giant, Goliath. The whole Israelite army was scared of Goliath, but David wasn't afraid of him. With just a little sling and a stone, he killed Goliath.
In 1 Samuel 17:46 we can read what David said to Goliath. "This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will smite you and cut off your head. And I will give the corpses of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel." David wasn't afraid of Goliath because he trusted the Lord. Even though he was small in stature, God gave him victory because he wasn't fearful of Goliath.
It's amazing how faith and confidence in God will give you an inner strength to be victorious in any situation. Your faith in God will give you the ability to use whatever is at your disposal to gain victory over any obstacle in your life. For everything that you face, God has already equipped you with everything that you need. That's why you should never be afraid, especially of people.
Actually, your fear of man will most likely cause you to do something that is contrary to the Word of God. Whoever you are fearful of is whomever you will work to please. If you fear God, then you will please God. If you fear people, then you will please people. If you try to please people, then you will probably do things that are not pleasing to God.
Let's look at King Saul as an example. Before he was going to battle, he was supposed to wait for the priest, Samuel to come and offer a sacrifice unto the Lord. Only Samuel could offer the sacrifice. But when Saul saw all the people, he became fearful of them. He decided not to wait for Samuel and he offered up the sacrifices to God himself. Because of that fear, Saul did something that displeased the Lord.
So whenever you fear people, you will often get swerved to do things that are contrary to God's Word. But when you trust in the Lord and you are assured that His presence is in your life, then God will enable you to do what is right. So anytime you are fearful, just repeat this confession: "The Lord is with me; I will not fear." This is a positive confession of faith and that confession of faith will activate God to move on your behalf.
Then we read in verse 7a of this psalm, "The Lord is on my side and takes my part…" So along with God being with you, God will also take your part, meaning He will help you become victorious. Then it says that "He is among those who help me; therefore shall I see my desire established upon those who hate me." God will help those who are helping you because you are trusting in the Lord. With His help, you will overcome every situation in your life.
Now let's look at the example of Daniel. In Daniel 10:12 we read, "Then he said to me, Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your mind and heart to understand and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come as a consequence of [and in response to] your words." So Daniel prayed and prayed and because he stayed in faith, God answered him. The words that we speak, which are really our prayers, are what moves God to send His angels on our behalf. That's why we have to speak words of faith.
So no matter what struggles, obstacles, or life situations we face, we should always be assured that God is with us and we need not be afraid. When we speak words of faith through positive confessions and through prayer, God will answer and He will bring us to victory. He will help us overcome our situations and He will help those who are helping us. So today, let's make that positive confession of faith: "The Lord is on my side; I will not fear." And let's trust that God will make us victorious!
