Psalm 65:4b, Psalm 81:10b
"We shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your house, Your holy temple."
"Open your mouth wide and I will fill it."
There is an amazing truth expressed in these passages. First let's look at chapter 65, verse 4b. "We shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your house, Your holy temple." In other words, satisfaction in life comes from being in the presence of God, reading and listening to His Word, and meditating upon His truth. Those are the very things that we need to do each and every day. Complete satisfaction of our hearts is found in the house of God, which is really His presence.
The German translation, Hoffnung fuer Alle, (which means, ‘hope for all') says in this verse, "He satisfies our longings." That is a very powerful statement. We all have longings within our hearts. We all have desires and goals that we would like to achieve, but God is the One who satisfies our longings.
When I was 15 years old, I longed to be 20 years old. When I turned 20, I longed for a good wife. When I got married, I longed to have children. When I had children, I longed to have a house of my own. There are all kinds of things that I longed for and all kinds of things that we all long for as human beings. But once we achieve those goals, there is still a hunger within our hearts that hasn't been satisfied. Here in the Word of God, this verse says that God satisfies all our longings. So He will bring satisfaction to you that nothing else can.
God, through His Word and His Spirit, is the only One who can still that inner hunger that we have. Psalm 81:10b really confirms this. "Open your mouth wide and I will fill it." In the German translation, the entire verse 10 says, "You are supposed to long after Me, and I will satisfy you, giving you a blessing to an overflow." All of the other things that we long for in life are just symptoms of a deeper longing that we have in our hearts that only God can fill to satisfaction.
An ancient theologian (5th century A.D.) named Saint Augustine once said that God has created each of us with a vacuum in our hearts that only He can fill. Nothing else will satisfy us fully. So here in chapter 81, verse 10b this Scripture says that we are supposed to long after God and seek Him. Then God will satisfy us and give us an overflow of blessing. An overflow of blessing means that God will bless us so abundantly that we will have more than enough.
When we seek after God and spend time in His presence, God gives us creative ideas. Once we put those creative ideas into practice, then we will be blessed to an overflow. So our source of blessing and satisfaction is in God. If we don't read God's Word and spend time in the presence of God, God cannot give us creative ideas. Without creative ideas, we won't have anything to put into practice. And without work, God cannot bless us to an overflow. That's spending time in the presence of God is so important.
There are many women who are constantly going from one man to another looking for satisfaction. There are so many men who are going from one woman to another looking for satisfaction as well. But they never find it because only God can completely satisfy us to overflowing.
There are things that you and I long for and things you and I want to achieve in life. There's nothing wrong with that. But the root to achieving all those things is God, His Word, and our obedience to His Word. He is the One who will help us achieve the things we long for in life, and He is the One who will complete our satisfaction. But true satisfaction is only found in His presence.
So dear friend, always remember that your source of happiness is God. The root of happiness and success is not found in yourself or in other people. It's found in God Himself. Put God and His Word first in your heart, first in your marriage, first in your work, and first in your ministry, and you will be satisfied to overflowing!
