"Fear not [there is nothing to fear], for I am with you; do not look around you in terror and be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen and harden you to difficulties, yes, I will help you; yes, I will hold you up and retain you with My [victorious] right hand of rightness and justice."
This verse was a motivational verse for my wife and I during our early years of marriage. It starts with a command. It says, "Fear not." In other words, don't be afraid. Many people are often afraid, especially of the future. They worry about finding the right spouse, making enough money to survive, having enough money to retire, and so on. People are afraid of all kinds of things. But despite all the different things people are afraid of, God says in this verse, "Fear not."
The rest of the verse tells us why we shouldn't be afraid. God says, "..for I am with you…" The moment that you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, God sends the Holy Spirit into your heart. The Holy Spirit is really God, Himself, and His presence. With God inside you, you really have nothing to be fearful of. People begin to fear things when they start drifting away from God. When people start disobeying God and living in sin, or when they aren't serving God the way they should be, that's when fear creeps in. But when you obey God, you replace that fear with faith.
Then this verse says, "Do not look around you in terror…" Fear happens when you look at your situation rather than looking at God. When you look at what's going on around you, you'll be in terror. So look at God and His almighty power instead. When you focus your attention on God, the situation around you won't seem as scary.
Notice what this verse then says, "I am your God. I will strengthen and harden you to difficulties." So God will give you the strength that you need to overcome all of your difficult situations. He is going to toughen you up. Then it says, "I will hold you up and retain you with My [victorious] right hand…" God is the One who will bring you victory. He is the One who will ensure that you overcome your obstacles. So fear not! You don't overcome a situation by approaching it with fear. You overcome it when you approach it with faith. Know that God is always with you, strengthening you, and bringing you to victory.
The only fear we should have is the fear of God, which is really reverence to God. That means loving and respecting Him – following His ways and obeying His Word. Other than that, there is nothing in this world that we need to be fearful of. There is no difficulty that we can't face when God is with us. When we replace fear with faith, we will overcome any situation in our lives.
