MIGHTY IN MIND AND SPIRIT
Date: May 18
1 Chronicles 5:24
"And these were the heads of their fathers' houses: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, mighty men of strength of mind and spirit [enabling them to encounter danger with firmness and personal bravery], famous men, and heads of the houses of their fathers."
When you talk about strengths, failures, bravery, and fame, often people think of physical strength. But that's not always the case. This verse describes how these people became famous. They became famous because they were mighty men of strength, mind, and spirit. It's not only physical strength that can make you strong. Actually, far greater strength is of the mind and spirit. But what is the mind and what is the spirit? Are they things you can see? No. When you're strong in mind and spirit, you will still stand up even when you're pressed down.
So, when someone tells you something negative like, "You're good for nothing," you're not going to bind to that lie. You're going to say, "I am a child of the living King." When somebody hurts you, you're not going to think of ways to get revenge. When somebody pressures you to have sex before marriage, or when somebody tries to persuade you to commit adultery, your mind and spirit will say, "No, that is evil in God's sight. So I'm not going to do it."
That's why the mind and spirit have to be strong. That way when temptation comes or when difficult situations arise, you will be able to stand on the Word of God no matter what. Notice what the Bible says a strong mind and spirit can do. It can enable them to "encounter danger with firmness and personal bravery."
That's why these people were famous. That's why these people were "heads." Do you know what the expression, "heads of the houses of their fathers" means in this verse? It means being a leader. So this verse is teaching us that in order to be famous and be a leader, we have to be mighty in mind and spirit. It's not as important to be strong in muscles than it is to be strong in mind and spirit. I want my children to become mighty in the Spirit of God. I think that's the greatest strength I could ever have and the greatest strength I could ever desire for my children.
A person who's mighty in mind will choose to expand their mind, and that will bring him far greater benefits than just being mighty in muscle. Even people in the world know this. Non-Christians even know that if you're mighty in mind and spirit, then you can become strong and famous.
Think of some of the famous people in our world today. Why are they famous? They're famous because they have used their minds well. All of the successful people in this world are people who have used their minds. It is their spirit that moves them and their mind that directs them. The mind gives us the skill and capability, but the spirit gives us the drive, the passion needed to get the task accomplished. So the more you train your mind and spirit, the more famous and the more powerful you will become. That's where real strength is. If you nurture your mind and spirit, you are going to become strong and famous in the Lord and in this world.
