Leviticus 19:2, 1 Peter 1:15-16
"Say to all the assembly of the Israelites, You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy."
"But as the One Who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all your conduct and manner of living. For it is written, You shall be holy, for I am holy."
The verse in Leviticus 19:2 is the key verse to understanding the entire book of Leviticus. So if you want to know what the book of Leviticus is about, read verse 2 of chapter 19. God wants us to be holy just as He is holy. If we are His children and He is our God, then we ought to be like Him. So if God is holy, then we are to be holy as well.
In the Hebrew, being holy means, "being separated from and separated for." So we are to be separated from the world and separated for God. Instead of being used by this world and for the purposes of this world, we should be separated for godly use. The rest of chapter 19 explains what it means to be holy.
Verse 3 says, "Each of you shall give due respect to his mother and his father, and keep My Sabbaths holy. I the Lord am your God." That is one of the ways we can be holy. When we honor our parents and we honor God and His Sabbath day, then that is a sign of holiness.
Verse 4 speaks about not turning to idols and things of nought. Verse 5 speaks about bringing our sacrifices before the Lord so that we may be accepted. Verse 10 says that we should take care of the poor and the stranger. Verse 11 says that we should not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another. We should not swear by God falsely, it says in verse 12. We should not defraud or oppress our neighbors, it says in verse 13. Verse 16 says that we should not gossip. Verse 17 says that we are not to hate our brother in our heart. Verse 26 says that we should not use magic, omens, or witchcraft, and so on and so forth.
These are just some of the things that tell us how to be holy. Our life of holiness really depends on our relationship with God. When our relationship with God is well then our relationship with people will be well too. How we relate with people is really where holiness lies. So your holiness is evident through the way you treat people. If you want to know whether or not you are holy, then check your actions and check your relationship with people.
Read the rest of chapter 19 and ask yourself if you do any of the things God speaks about in these passages. If you do, then you need to confess those sins and repent from them because God wants you to walk in holiness just as He is holy. Our holiness is shown through our actions. In other words, it is by our actions that we show ourselves separate from worldly use and separated for godly use. So choose to follow God today and choose to walk in holiness. But show that holiness through your actions and your relationship with other people.
