TRUE SATISFACTION COMES FROM GOD

"Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your earnings for what does not satisfy? Hearken diligently to Me, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness [the profuseness of spiritual joy]. Incline your ear [submit and consent to the divine will] and come to Me; hear, and your soul will revive; and I will make an everlasting covenant or league with you, even the sure mercy (kindness, goodwill, and compassion) promised to David."
Let's examine the first part of verse 2. It says, "Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your earnings for what does not satisfy?" Many people earn money and spend it on things that they think will satisfy them. They think that a big house, a nice car, and expensive vacations will bring them fulfillment in life. Some even think that getting married and having children will bring them full satisfaction in life. But through these verses, God shows us that those things that we spend our money on are not fulfilling. They can never give us the ultimate joy and peace that all of us long for in life.
So how can we receive that ultimate joy then? Well it says in this Scripture that we can receive it by hearkening diligently to God. In other words, we are to pay special attention to God and listen to what He has to say. We are to read His Word while hearkening to His voice. As you read the Word of God, think of how it applies to your life. Listen to what God speaks into your heart as you read His Word. When you do that, you will find satisfaction. It says in verse 2b, "and let your soul delight itself in fatness [the profuseness of spiritual joy]." You are primarily a spiritual being, and there are things that you need to do in order to take care of your spirit. You've got to spend time in the presence of God, reading His Word, and obeying His commandments.
Then it says in verse 3a, "Incline your ear [submit and consent to the divine will] and come to Me…" When you consciously decide to do what God wants you to do, then your soul will revive. A lot of people want revival; they want to be lively. They want to be happy and excited in life. But they don't want to come to God. Coming to God is the first step to your soul being revived. Whether or not you come to God is really your decision. But when you do, that is when you will find renewing in your heart. That is when you will be completely satisfied.
Verse 3b says that God "will make an everlasting covenant or league with you, even the sure mercy (kindness, goodwill, and compassion) promised to David." When God shows you mercy, He is really showing you undeserved favor. Even though we, as sinners, deserve punishment, God forgives us when we confess and repent from our sins because His Son, Jesus Christ, has already paid the penalty for our sins. When God forgives us, He shows us mercy. When we come to Him, that's what He's going to do. He'll show us His mercy, His kindness, His goodwill, and His compassion.
So remember: only God can give you that full satisfaction that material things cannot. Do you want full satisfaction from God? Then listen diligently to Him. Incline your ears to what He says and obey His commandments. Then He'll revive your soul. He'll show you His goodness and He'll bring you to complete satisfaction. Despite the storms that may come your way or the difficulties that may arise, you will still be at peace because of your satisfaction in God. Through that, God will give you the inner strength that you need to overcome any and every obstacle in your life. So listen to God, and obey what He says because in Him you will find true and complete satisfaction in life.
