HEALING COMES AFTER FORGIVENESS

"O Lord, by these things men live; and in all these is the life of my spirit. O give me back my health and make me live! Behold, it was for my peace that I had intense bitterness; but You have loved back my life from the pit of corruption and nothingness, for You have cast all my sins behind Your back."
This story is about King Hezekiah who became sick at the age of thirty-nine. He was so sick that he was supposed to die. Here, Hezekiah is praying. We read in verse 15a, "But what can I say? For He has both spoken to me and He Himself has done it." Hezekiah acknowledges that he lives only because God speaks. In the German translation (Hoffnung fuer Alle, which means, ‘hope for all'), verse 15a says, "Your deeds and Your words from that is what I live." So we all live on the words and deeds of God. We are all alive because of what God says and does. People often forget that they live because of God. There is greater fulfillment in life when the Word of God is spoken into our hearts and the deeds of God are considered by our thoughts.
It is so important that each and every one of us become mighty in spirit. Our focus should not be towards becoming mighty in money, in knowledge, or in power. All of those things will come when we become mighty in spirit. But how do we become mighty in spirit? Well we start by letting the Word of God reside within our hearts. We should always base our life decisions on what the voice of God speaks to our spirits.
That's how you walk in the spirit. You walk in the spirit when you are constantly listening to the voice of God. Everything God speaks to your heart will always line up with His Word. That's how you will know when the Spirit of God is speaking to you. That's why you need to study the Word of God.
In verse 16b, we read that Hezekiah asked God to make him well. He asked God to give him back his health and make him live. Only God was able to restore him. Notice what the following verse says. It says in verse 17b, "…for You have cast all my sins behind Your back." So God forgave Hezekiah of his sins.
Many Scriptural passages teach us that healing comes after the forgiveness of sins. The two are connected to each other. You can see that in James 5:14 where it says "Is anyone among you sick? He should call in the church elders (the spiritual guides). And they should pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Lord's name. And the prayer [that is] of faith will save him who is sick, and the Lord will restore him; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven." Also, think back to the story of the paraplegic man who was brought through the roof of the house in which Jesus was. Before Jesus did any healing, He first forgave the man's sins. So if you have a sin in your life, God wants you to confess it, repent from it, and then He will heal you. There are many sick people who receive prayer but never receive a healing. Why is that? Often, it is because they live in sin. They have to restore their spiritual health first before God can restore their physical health. That's how healing happens in our lives. God has to forgive us of our sins first, but God can't forgive us if we don't confess them.
Almost eighty percent of the sicknesses that people experience are a direct result of sin. Think of all the sexually transmitted diseases, for example. People are constantly catching viruses and diseases from fornication, promiscuity, and adultery. Sometimes people become ill because of bitterness or resentment within their hearts. There are all kinds of illnesses that are derived from sin. But if we confess our sins and live a godly lifestyle, then eighty percent of sicknesses will never come to us. And the other twenty percent of sickness that could come to us will be healed when we ask God to heal us and we receive our healing by faith. When we are forgiven of our sins and when we obey the Word of God, then we will experience God's healing power..
But keep in mind what I emphasized earlier. All of this comes through the spirit. When we become mighty in spirit, then we will know and recognize the voice of God. When we walk in the spirit, we can walk in divine health. That's why we have to be led by the Spirit of God. That's why we have to treasure the Word of God in our hearts.
