"This Book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe and do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall deal wisely and have good success."
This verse gives us a formula for true happiness and success. Everybody longs for happiness and success. Sometimes they think that if they get a good job, they'll make lots of money and be happy. We should get a good education and a good job. The more money we make, the easier life is for us. But all of those things will not make us happy. Sometimes people think that if they marry the right person, they'll be happy. But many people marry and then divorce. Some people look for happiness in drugs, alcohol, money, relationships, etc. But these things don't satisfy us. In this verse, God gives us a formula for true happiness.
Verse 8 says, "This Book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night…" In other words, God wants the Word of God to always be on your lips. In order for that to happen, we have to spend time reading His Word. But He doesn't want us to read it just for reading's sake. He wants us to pray as well and allow God to speak to our hearts through His Word. That way the Word will be planted in your heart and bring fruit for His glory.
As you read and memorize the Word of God, it's also important to speak it. That's what this verse means – the Word of God should always be on your lips. Speak it to people in your church, your family and friends, your neighbors, and other people you may encounter. We should never tear people down with our speech. We should use our speech to bless others, and there's no better way to bless others than by speaking the Word of God over them. So when we open our mouths, we should speak the Word of God.
We should also speak the Word of God over our children. We should spend time teaching them from the Scriptures. Growing up, I never had a father who taught me from the Word of God. My father was a drunkard and a gambler. Because of that, I determined in myself to do the opposite of my father and teach my children from the Word of God. There are usually 31 days in a month. There are 31 chapters in the book of Proverbs. You can read a chapter a day and teach your children the entire book of Proverbs in one month. When you're done going through the book of Proverbs, go to the Ten Commandments. When you're done with the Ten Commandments, go to the Sermon the Mount. Teaching your children from the Word of God doesn't take longer than 10-15 minutes, and it's so beneficial for their wellbeing because you are speaking the Word of God just as this verse instructs.
But this verse doesn't stop there. It then says, "..that you may observe and do according to all that is written in it." So the reason why God wants us to know His Word is so that we will do according to all that is written in it. In other words, He wants us to obey His Word. There is great blessing when we obey God's Word.
The verse then says, "For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall deal wisely and have good success." That is the great blessing that comes from obedience to the Word of God –prosperity, wisdom, and success. But notice that it says you will act wisely before you have good success. Some people think that God will force success upon you. But really God gives you the wisdom to become successful.
So as a result of reading the Bible and speaking the Bible, you are going to act wisely. As a result of acting wisely, you are going to become successful. That's where prosperity comes from. So God is the one who gives you true happiness and success, but it comes through obedience to His Word. When you do that, you will make a difference in your own life and the lives of other people.
