Ruth 3:3-4, 9
"Wash and anoint yourself therefore, and put on your best clothes and go down to the threshing floor, but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. But when he lies down, notice the place where he lies; then go and uncover his feet and lie down. And he will tell you what to do."
"And he said, Who are you? And she answered, I am Ruth your maidservant, Spread your wing [of protection] over your maidservant, for you are a next of kin."
I've met quite a few girls who didn't know what to do in order to find a man to marry them. I've also met men in the same situation as well. Though there are teachings on what a man should do in order to get married, this particular passage is for women. This passage really focuses on what a girl should do in order to marry. Naomi is teaching her daughter-in-law, Ruth (who at this point was widowed) what she should do in order to find a man to marry her.
The first thing she says is, "Wash and anoint yourself therefore…" So the first thing Ruth had to do was wash herself; in other words, take a shower. When she did that, then she had to anoint herself, meaning put some oils and perfumes in order to smell nice. She couldn't go looking for a husband if she smelled awful. So that's the first thing that Ruth had to do – take a shower and put on some nice oils.
But that's not where she stopped. Naomi then said, "..and put on your best clothes…" So Ruth had to dress nicely. Men like women in nice clothes. To a man, it's important that his wife dresses well. Clothes have a way of expressing a person's character. It's not to say that a woman should wear clothes to show off her breasts and legs, but she should wear clothes that are very decent that will express her beauty. The clothes that a woman wears should direct a man's eyes towards her face. That's why it's important that Ruth dressed nicely.
Now that Ruth had showered and put on some nice perfume and now that she had put on some nice clothes, what else was she supposed to do? The rest of the verse says, "..and go down to the threshing floor…" In other words, she was to go down to where the man is – the man who she wanted to marry. And that's what Ruth did. She went to the man she wanted to marry and she lied down at his feet. Then in the middle of the night, the man, whose name was Boaz, woke up. He was taken by surprise and asked her what she was doing.
In verse 9b Ruth says, "Spread your wing [of protection] over your maidservant, for you are a next of kin." Men are often taken by the speech of a woman, not just by the looks or the clothes. There is nothing more attractive than a girl who is nicely dressed, smiles, and speaks favorably towards a man. One of the greatest things that a man needs is the praise of his wife. So it's important that a woman speaks well to the man she wants to marry.
These are the things that Ruth did in order to marry. She washed herself, anointed herself with oil, and went down to the man she wanted to marry. Then she told him that she wanted to marry him. Men are attracted to women who dress attractively, smell nicely, speak well, and know what they want. So if you're a woman who wants to marry, take some of the guidance taught from this story of Ruth. That is what will attract a man to you.
