REMEMBER GOD IN YOUR INCREASE
Date: March 5
"When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the Lord your God for all the good land which He has given you. Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God by not keeping His commandments, His precepts, and His statutes which I command you today, lest when you have eaten and are full, and have built goodly houses and live in them, and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all you have is multiplied, then your [minds and] hearts be lifted up and you forget the Lord your God, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house bondage."
It says here that there will come a time that you will start multiplying and increasing in great abundance. You will have more kids, more animals, more herds, more gold and silver, nice houses, and more than enough of everything that you need. But Moses, through this passage, warns us not to let those things get to our heads and not to let them rule our lives to the point where money and things become more important than God and people.
But why does he warn us? Well there is a danger in letting those material things get to our heads. We end up forgetting the Lord, the One who blessed us with all that increase in the first place. How do we forget the Lord? We forget Him by not keeping His commandments, His precepts, and His statutes, it says in verse 11. Many people forget about God when they have everything that they need. They forget that it was God who blessed them with the increase in the first place.
In verse 14 Moses says, "Then your [minds and] hearts be lifted up and you forget the Lord your God, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage." Sometimes people become prideful of their house, their cars, and all the money that they have, and they forget about the God who blessed them with all those things.
Actually when you read verses 17-18 it says, "And beware lest you say in your [mind and] heart, My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth. But you shall [earnestly] remember the Lord your God, for it is He Who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day."
So it is the Lord God who gives you the power to get wealth. He gives you the ability, the skill, the talent to go out and prosper. Some people think that it is the Lord God who gives you the wealth. But that's not true. He gives you the power to get wealth, but you've got to go out and get it through diligence and hard work. But it is God who gives you that power. He is the One who blesses you with the skills and ability. Without Him, you would not be able to gain anything. So Moses warns us not to forget about God. An indication that we have forgotten about God is when we stop keeping His commandments. So we should beware of that.
When God gives us food to eat and blesses us with more than enough of everything we need, that is the time to remember Him. But how do we remember God? We remember God by obeying His commandments and keeping His precepts and statutes. We honor God when we obey His Word.
For example, in our increase, we remember God by giving our tithes and offerings to Him. When you give God your tithes, you are really saying to Him, "Lord, everything that You have allowed me to earn is all Yours. So now, I give the best part of it back to You." You show Him that He is the owner of all that you have. That's how you remember God.
God is the one who has given us the skill, the ability, the power, the knowledge and the wisdom that we need to increase. So when we do increase, Moses warns us here, through these passages, that we should not forget the Lord. Instead, we should remember Him and praise Him for His goodness. And we do that by obeying His commandments.
