WHAT OBEDIENCE BRINGS YOU
Date: March 3
"Therefore you people shall be watchful to do as the Lord your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. You shall walk in all the ways which the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land which you shall possess."
In this passage, God tells us why He wants us to obey His commandments. The reason why we obey God's commandments is so we might live and live a long life and so that things will be well in our lives. If we don't follow the commandments of God, it is accurate to say that we might not even live at all; our lives on the earth become shortened.
People who don't love each other and have bitterness towards one another live under stress and are more likely to die sooner. The Word of God says so and research says so. People who are promiscuous and live a sexually immoral life are more likely to catch a disease and die sooner. People who hold back their tithes from the Lord and squander all their money are not only robbing from God, but they are also robbing from themselves. Because of that, they worry when a financial need arises. People who choose not to work become sluggish and lazy and as a result, their poverty will come. So when we don't do the commandments of God, our lives cannot be well. That's why God tells us to obey His commandments. Keeping His commandments will not only keep us alive, but it will also give us a long and prosperous life.
Looking back at verse 29 we read, "Oh, that they had such a [mind and] heart in them always [reverently] to fear Me and keep all My commandments, that it might go well with them and with their children forever!" God gave us His statutes, commandments, and precepts so that we can learn them and obey them in order to reverently fear the Lord. When we obey them, everything will be well in our lives and the lives of our children. That is God's intention.
Verse 32a says, "Therefore you people shall be watchful to do as the Lord your God has commanded you…" Being watchful means keeping the charge of what you have been commanded. It means making sure nothing comes between you and the commandments that you have to keep. Verse 32b says, "..you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left." So you cannot be swayed back and forth – from obeying God to disobeying God, obeying God to disobeying God. You've got to be steadfast in your walk with the Lord. You cannot be led astray from the commandments of God.
Finally, verse 33a says, "You shall walk in all the ways which the Lord your God has commanded you…" To walk in the ways of the Lord means to live in all the ways of the Lord. It means making all those commandments a part of your lifestyle. But you can't just obey some of the commandments; you have to obey all of them. That is when you will have the promise in verse 33b. "..that you may live and that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land which you shall possess." This is why God wants you to obey His commandments. We are the ones who benefit when we obey God. So let's choose to obey God today!
