THERE IS NO OTHER

"Know, recognize, and understand therefore this day and turn your [mind and] heart to it that the Lord is God in the heavens above and upon the earth beneath; there is no other. Therefore you shall keep His statutes and His commandments, which I command you this day, that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you may prolong your days in the land which the Lord your God gives you forever."
This is the last part of Moses' first sermon that he gave before the Israelites entered into the promised land. He says, "Know, recognize, and understand…" Those are very synonymous words, meaning they have similar definitions. The Hebrew word for "know" is yada. It means to have experiential knowledge of God. It's not good enough just to have head knowledge. You have to have experiential knowledge. This knowledge comes from obeying God. Once you have experiential knowledge of God, your mind and your heart has to understand that the Lord is God and there is no other.
God should be the only God in your life. Don't ever put anybody else in front of Him. God is to take priority over everything and everyone in your life – not a music star, a film star, or a sports star. God should be the only God. Don't let anybody else sway you away from the Word of God. In everyday life, that's how you will show who has priority in your life. You show it through your actions every day. When it comes to committing a sin, are you going to give in to the temptation or are you going to find the way of escape? That's how you show whether or not God is first in your life.
In verse 40a Moses says, "Therefore you shall keep His statutes and His commandments, which I command you this day…" Keeping God's commandments means doing them on a daily basis, living our lives in accordance to His Word. The rest of verse 40 says, "that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you may prolong your days in the land which the Lord your God gives you forever." So the reason why we keep God's commandments is so that everything will be well with us. Our marriage, our children, our careers, our lives altogether will be well when we obey God.
Not only will your life be well but this verse also says that you are going to live long. So when you obey God, your years will be prolonged upon the earth. But if you turn away from God and live in disobedience, then your life will be cut short. For example, think of a prostitute – a woman who has sex with several different strangers sometimes with protection, sometimes without. She would most likely get an STD and die. Her life is cut short because of that sinful lifestyle. So doing things that are sinful in the sight of God will shorten your life. But when you obey God and keep His commandments, God says here that your life will be prolonged.
How well we live and how long we live is directly linked to how obedient we are to God and His Word. But we shouldn't just obey God because of benefits that we can gain from it. The key element to notice here is that verse 39b says, "..the Lord is God in heavens above and upon the earth beneath; there is no other." That is the ultimate reason why we should obey God. We should obey Him because He is God and there is no other. That's why you and I should live in line with his Word. He is the One who is worthy of all our praise, our worship, and our obedience. So let's obey God today and do what pleases Him because other than Him, there is no other.
