LOVING GOD MEANS OBEYING HIM

"Therefore you shall love the Lord your God and keep His charge, His statutes, His precepts, and His commandments always. And know this day – for I am not speaking to your children who have not [personally] known and seen it – the instruction and discipline of the Lord your God: His greatness, His mighty hand, and His outstretched arm."
The love of God is not like a love between friends. That kind of love is conditional, meaning it is based upon what you can do for the other person and what the other person can do for you. The love of God is an unconditional love.
As we continue reading this passage, the Bible tells us how we can really love God. Verse 1a says, "Keep His charge, His statutes, His precepts, and His commandments always." That's how we express our love to God. A similar verse is found in John 14:21a where it says, "The person who has My commands and keeps them is the one who [really] loves Me; and whoever [really] loves Me will be loved by My Father…"
First we must have the commandments in our hearts meaning we have to read and meditate upon the Word of God. Then we have to actually do the commandments. Jesus said that whoever does that are really the ones who love Him, and the Father will love those, who really love Jesus. Of course, God loves us without measure, but there is a unique relationship of God's love for us when we respond to Him in love.
It's like the love between parents and children. Parents will always love their children no matter what. But when the children respond to the parents in love by obeying them, there is a unique bond that develops. It's the same thing with the love between you and God.
Deuteronomy 11:2a says, "And know this day – for I am not speaking to your children who have not [personally] known and seen it…" God was speaking to the people who saw the miracles in Egypt. So God is really talking to the people who believe in Him. This means that it is possible for someone to believe in God, but not spend time in His Word. It is possible to believe in God but not obey the Word of God. There are too many people who go to church and read the Word but live their own lives like God doesn't even exist. You can always see it through the way they speak about others and themselves, the way they think, and the way they live.
Through this passage, we know that in order to really love God, we have to keep His commandments. So as we continue in this day, let's continue with the Word of God in our hearts. Let's continue with determination and desire to do whatever the Lord commands us to do.
