"You shall do My ordinances and keep My statutes and walk in them. I am the Lord your God. You shall therefore keep My statutes and My ordinances which, if a man does, he shall live by them. I am the Lord."
This is an amazing passage. It says that if we do the commandments, the ordinances, and the statutes of God, then we will live by them. Some people only exist on the earth just because they are here. But many people truly enjoy life. They acknowledge their existence and they make the best of it. How do we do that? How can we enjoy life, but primarily, how can we enjoy the spouse that God has given us? Well it says here that we have to obey the ordinances of God. That simply means doing what God says.
But what are those statutes? God describes what His statutes are in the rest of this chapter. He mainly speaks about all the wrongful sins concerning sex that we should not commit. For example, verse 7 says that you should not have sex with your mother. Verse 8 says that you should not have sex with your father's wife. Verse 9 says not to have sex with your sister, and verse 10 says not to have sex with your son's daughter or your daughter's daughter. Verse 11 says not to have sex with your father's wife's daughter. Verse 12 says not to have sex with your father's sister. Verse 13 says not to have sex with your mother's sister. Furthermore we read that you should not have sex with your aunt (v. 14), daughter-in-law (v.15), brother's wife (v. 16), a women and her daughter, or her son's or daughter's daughter (v. 17), a women and her sister (v. 18), a women during her menstrual period (v. 19), neighbor's wife (v. 20), with a man as with a women (v. 21), nor any beast (v. 23). This chapter spells out very clearly biblical directives whom you should not have sex with as well as in what circumstances you should not have sex.
So obeying the commandments of God, in this case, is obeying these laws that God has laid out in this chapter about sex. Sex should be pure meaning that it should only be done within a legal marriage between a man and a woman. Your marriage bed should be holy and sanctified, meaning it should only be for you and your spouse and no one else.
If the intimacy between a husband and a wife is healthy, then both spouses won't be looking for sexual ratification in anyone else. That's why you should make sure that you are regularly intimate with your spouse to maintain a strong marriage. For that to happen, both spouses have to pay close attention to one another and know what makes the other person happy. When everything is well within your sexual relationship with your spouse, then there is no need to look for anybody else. There is no room for adultery to take place.
