HOLINESS AND SEXUAL PURITY

"You shall therefore keep all My statutes and all My ordinances and do them, that the land where I am bringing you to dwell may not vomit you out [as it did those before you]. You shall not walk in the customs of the nations which I am casting out before you; for they did all these things, and therefore I was wearied and grieved by them."
This is a very strong word of God. God is telling the Israelites to keep His statutes and His ordinances and do them. Why is God telling them to do that? Well it says in verse 22b, "that the land where I am bringing you to dwell may not vomit you out…" In other words, if the Israelites walk in the customs of the people who don't follow God, then they will be cast out of that land just like all the immoral people were cast out [verse 23].
Throughout this chapter, God reveals to us the customs of those sinful people and He tells us to be separate from them and not do the immoral things that they do. For example in verse 9, God says that we should not curse our father or mother. Verse 10 says that we should not commit adultery. Verse 11 says that you should not sleep with the wife of your father. Verse 12 says that you should not sleep with your daughter-in-law. In verse 13, God says that a man should not be having sex with another man. In verse 14, God says that a man should not take a wife and her mother.
Verse 15 says that you should not have intercourse with an animal. Verse 16 says that you should not marry a sister or a half sister. Verse 18 says that you cannot have sex with your wife when she is on her period. Verse 19 says that you should not sleep with the sister of your mother or your father. Verse 20 says not to sleep with your uncle's wife. Verse 21 says not to marry your brother's wife. So those are the customs of the people who used to dwell in the land, which God gave to the Israelites. Those people sinned against God by living a lifestyle of sexual immorality. That's why God cast them out of their land. That's why the land "vomited them."
So God tells us to keep His statutes and His ordinances so that we won't be cast out like the others. We can see through this passage that a major part of being holy is being sexually pure. God doesn't want people to have sex until they're married and once they are married, He doesn't want them to have sex outside of marriage. The only time sex is holy and appropriate is when it is done within a marriage between a man and a woman. The blessing of God is upon those who obey Him, so that's why we should obey God and live in holiness.
