FEAR OF GOD
Date: February 7
"Therefore you shall do and give effect to My statutes and keep My ordinances and perform them, and you will dwell in the land in safety. The land shall yield its fruit; you shall eat your fill and dwell there in safety."
In verse 17, the Bible speaks about how we should not oppress and wrong each other; instead we should reverently fear God. When it says that we should fear God, it doesn't mean that we should be afraid of God. To fear God, in this verse, really means not oppressing other people. We shouldn't hurt other people; we shouldn't offend other people; we shouldn't wrong other people. Instead, we should fear God. So your relationship with God determines your relationship with people.
It says in verse 18a, "Therefore you shall do and give effect to My statutes and keep My ordinances and perform them…" In other words, hold on to God's commandments and direct your life in accordance to them. Do what God is expecting of you. That's how you show that you fear God. Doing God's commandments means you relate well with God; relating well with God means you relate well with other people.
When you obey God and you are in good relationship with other people, there are promises that God will fulfill. It says in verse 18b, "you will dwell in the land in safety." Nothing will harm you because you're obeying God and relating well with people. The second promise mentioned in this passage is in verse 19a. "The land shall yield its fruit…" So not only will you live safely, but also your land will yield its fruit. In other words, you're going to prosper!
The third promise is found in verse 19b where it says, "you shall eat your fill and dwell there in safety." In other words, God will make sure you have more than enough and you are satisfied. There are people who work and work but can never enjoy what they earn because it still is never enough. That's because they don't have the blessing of God. The blessing of God is to be fully satisfied in His provision.
God will fulfill all those promises when we obey Him and when we are in good relationship with other people. Your relationship with other people is a picture of your relationship with God. You can't love God but hate your brother. If you love God, then that love will allow you to love everyone else. That is how you will show that you fear God. When you walk in the fear of God, it means that you obey God. When you obey God, it means that you don't wrong other people. That is what will lead you to prosperity.
